Water is an essential commodity because people need to drink a certain amount of water each day. This makes packaged water business highly lucrative especially in hot, humid regions of the world.
Third world countries struggle with adequate drinking water making packaged water essential to most homes. Small and medium businesses make up 60% of packaged drinking water producers.
The water is packaged in glass bottles, plastic bottles and nylon sachets. Water suitable for
drinking has to pass quality and standard controls. The company should conform to specific standards and certification.
Sourcing Drinking Water
The composition of water is hydrogen and oxygen and it is all around us. However the suitability of the water for drinking depends on the purity of the liquid.
Water generally harbors lots of harmful bacteria and impurities cause’s different illnesses. Bad water can cause dysentery, diarrhea, stomach ache and typhoid.
Bottle water producers get their water from different sources. Common water sources are boreholes, general tap, springs, lakes, rivers and wells.
Once the water is pumped into their tanks it needs to go through a number of filtration systems to purify the water. The water is fortified with chemicals such as manganese, iron and barium.
Natural springs provide the best quality water due to the natural rock filtration properties.
Marketing Bottled Water
Drinking water needs to be safe before consumption. This is not the case in many third world countries.
The bottled water is the only alternative for travelers, tourists and local inhabitants. Lack of proper infrastructure and poor water supply has increased the importance of portable drinking water.
The demand for the product is huge amounting to billions of dollars in sales worldwide. The huge customer base includes residential homes, offices, factories, restaurants and hospitals. Others are hostels, hotels, event centers, recreational centers and public parks.
Basic Water Packaging Company Requirements
Write a business plan and carry out a comprehensive feasibility study. You need provisional registration and apply for a business loan.
Permits include pollution control board clearance from accredited municipal authorities. Once the permits are obtained find a good location for your drinking water factory.
The location should be close to the source of raw material in this case water. The next step is to purchase equipment, install and connect utility.
You need lots of electrical power and filtration systems. Hire appropriate staff such as machine operators, management staff and drivers.
Production Capacity
The size of the bottling company depends on the funding, machinery and labor. Average sized water bottling company production line should produce at least 10,000 sachets or bottles of water in 16 hours. This comes to about 30,000 liters a day.
Locating the Packaged Water Plant
The water bottling plant should be located in an urban area. Water is very heavy so nearness to the customer base and source is very important.
The ideal location should have a good road network, factory space and docking area. It should have a car park and easy accessibility.
Financing the Water Packaging Enterprise
It is slightly challenging financing a water packaging business.  The funds are needed for building construction, landed proper or lease agreements.
You need good quality machinery and equipment. Other requirements are fixed and working capital to cover labor costs, transportation and utility charges.
Drinking Water Production Process
The packaging company sources and pumps the water into storage tanks. Alum is introduced and a reverse osmosis method is used to remove impurities.
The water then goes to a chlorination tank and on-wards movement to sand filters. The function of the sand filters is to trap un-dissolved impurities in the water.
De-chlorination, color and odor are removed through a carbon filtration system. The water continues through micro filters and an ultraviolet disinfection system.
The final stage of the production line is packaging the water. The water is packaged in plastic bottles, capped or sachet nylon and sealed.
Throughout the filtration system high quality control is essential to produce pure drinking water.

Other staffs are security, receptionist, purchase officer, lab assistant, production supervisor and company accountant.
